Tartan & Whisky on Edinburgh's Royal Mile
02 Sep 2011
At the Tartan Weaving Mill located on Edinburgh's Historic Royal Mile, visitors can learn all about the traditional processes involved in tartan production from shearing sheep to making a kilt. They can also be fitted for and photographed wearing full Highland Regalia and experience the fascinating history of Scotland's National Dress.
The Mill occupies a building which used to be the Castle Hill reservoir - the main water supply for all the occupants of the Royal Mile and is now run by Geoffrey (Tailor) Kiltmakers & Weavers. There are 5 storeys to explore inside with working looms and the authentic atmosphere of a busy factory.
Other interesting sites to explore along the Royal Mile include the Scotch Whisky Experience, where a swirling, bubbling whisky barrel ride through a replica distillery brings the 300 year history of whisky production to life, using sounds, smells and life-like figures. Throughout the interactive tour, expert guides and whisky advisors are on hand every sip of the way.
